Review

Spice and Wolf is about a traveling merchant, Craft Lawrence, and the harvest wolf god Holo. Holo had always blessed the wheat crop of the country area called Yoitsu, causing good crops, but over time, as better ways of growing the crops were developed, the people of the area stopped relying on Holo’s help, and so she escapes the area by hiding in Lawrence’s wagon.

While Lawrence doesn’t appreciate the company to start with, Holo has a keen eye (and ears) for a good – or bad – deal, a trait which Lawrence eventually starts to appreciate. In return for this, Lawrence agrees to eventually agree to travel with Holo to return her to her homeland in the north.

The primary thing that drives this show along is Holo and her personality and interactions with Lawrence – especially since they are largely the only two major characters in the entire series. While Holo is indeed an intriguing character, it’s hard for a single character to carry an entire series, and that ends up being the case here. I think Spice and Wolf would have been good had either more gone on or the length of the show was cut in half or so, but a show about economics dragging on for 12 or 13 episodes just doesn’t work that well. Oh yeah, and Holo being naked half the time is kind of annoying to me.

The technicals of the show – the animation and music – are good enough, I suppose, and this may be a worth series to watch if you’ve already seen everything else, but there are just so many other series out there which are better and more entertaining to watch than this.

Kadokawa Pictures USA licenses H2O, Ninomiya-kun, Rental Magica, others

I’m following at gia’s and japanator’s.

Kadokawa has licensed the 12 episode H2O: Footprints in the sand, Good Luck! Ninomiya-kun (aka Goshūshō-sama Ninomiya-kun) which is also 12 episodes, and Rental Magica, which is 24 episodes.

No word on who is doing the producing or distributing yet.

Update: They picked up Coo ~Our Guardian~ (aka Wagaya no Oinarisama) too (also 24 eps).

Update 2: Wow. On a spree.  They got Junjou Romantica as well (releasing it as Romantica ~Pure Love~) which is a 12 episode boy’s love series which just finished airing.

Update 3: To round it out they pick up Spice and Wolf too!  Good grief they’re going crazy! Who do they think they are? Funimation?

Update 4: Apparently we won’t get any word who producers and distributors are tonight, but should "very soon"

First Thoughts: Spice and Wolf

Spice and Wolf is another series I wasn’t planning on watching and picked up after some good initial reviews. I’m still kind of out on Spice and Wolf, but it seems like it may be quite a bit interesting – how many stories about a wolf god going around as a girl in the Middle Ages are there?

I’m just not sold on the idea that an anime about a wolf girl going around with a merchant all over the place will be exciting, but if there is one thing I’ve learned about anime, a good series can always find a way to make things which would otherwise be completely unexciting and actually turn them into something interesting (I hold Kaleido Star up as the prime example of such a series).

As a result, since the first episode looked interesting, and the production quality and writing seemed pretty good, I’ll still watch this series with some hope that it’ll be pretty good.

Winter 2008 Anime Preview

It’s that time again: It’s time to look at what anime is airing in the Winter 2008 season. I’m listing these in alphabetical order.

There are 6 levels of ratings that I’ll give a show this season:

  • Will definitely blog it
  • Will definitely watch it
  • May watch it
  • May watch it if I hear good things about it
  • Probably Won’t Watch it
  • Won’t watch it

I won’t include a “may blog it” category this time because I already know what I’m going to blog in this season.

As usual, I’m also going to leave out sequels to series that I haven’t seen yet, as well as anything that seems to obviously be a children’s show. As usual, thanks to the Fansub Wiki for keeping a great list of upcoming shows.

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way…here we go!
