Yui Horie is everywhere!

Ok, I know that Yui Horie is a fairly popular and a pretty prolific voice actress by now, but I didn’t realize how many shows I’m currently watching that she does a voice in.

I already knew she did the voice of Suzu in Nagasarete Airantou, just because she’s using her signature voice that basically only she can do. But I didn’t realize that she was both Yukiho in Idolmaster Xenoglossia (START SPOILERS - yes, the traitor bitch sabotager girl. - END SPOILERS) as well as Nanae Fujieda in Sky Girls (the communications girl who looks like Cousin Yui from Lucky Star).

Of course, this is on top of the multiple series that I’ve already seen that she’s done a voice in. I think the first I watched was Angelic Layer.

Where have I seen this before?

From the Associated Press via MSNBC: Mind-reading toys could revolutionize play

A convincing twin of Darth Vader stalks the beige cubicles of a Silicon Valley office, complete with ominous black mask, cape and light saber.

But this is no chintzy Halloween costume. It’s a prototype, years in the making, of a toy that incorporates brain wave-reading technology.

Behind the mask is a sensor that touches the user’s forehead and reads the brain’s electrical signals, then sends them to a wireless receiver inside the saber, which lights up when the user is concentrating. The player maintains focus by channeling thoughts on any fixed mental image, or thinking specifically about keeping the light sword on. When the mind wanders, the wand goes dark.

Where have I seen this before? Oh yes! From Angelic Layer. In fact, this technology works almost exactly has it is displayed in the anime series. There may be other anime or other shows that have similar things, but thats what I think of first.

NeuroSky chief Technology Officer KooHyoung Lee, left, staffer Cynthia Lee, center, and software engineer Horance Ko, right, don the company’s brain wave-reading headsets.

Input wanted: New anime fan site

I’ve been playing around with creating an Angelic Layer fan site for a while, and it keeps going on and off my radar, and right now it’s back on. I have a basic website up (no links or anything) but I wanted to get opinions on it.

Here is a link to it: http://www.calculusman.com/angelic/

Consider this post a place to put your comments about the design or whatever else about the website.

Studio BONES

BONES is well known to have many quality anime productions come out of it’s offices, many of them I’ve seen, and many of them I plan on seeing. This is just kind of a “I wanted to find out about this” post, but here is a list of anime series they’ve produced (not just did animation production, but the actual production as well), and the scores I gave them If I’ve reviewed them:

Escaflowne: The Movie (June 2000)
Clockwork Fighters Hiwou’s War (October 2000 - May 2001)
Angelic Layer (April - September 2001) - 91%
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (September 2001) - 85.6%
RahXephon (January - September 2002)
Wolf’s Rain (January - July 2003)
RahXeopon: The Movie (April 2003)
Scrapped Princess (April - October 2003) - Watched but haven’t reviewed
Fullmetal Alchemist (October 2003 - October 2004) - 90.5%
Mars Daybreak (April - September 2004)
Kurau: Phantom Memory (June - December 2004)
Fafner (July - December 2004)
Ouran High School Host Club (April - September 2006)
Ayakashi Ayashi (October 2006 - March 2007)
The Skullman (April 2007 - )

So I’ve watched 4, and reviewed 3 with an average score of 89%, with at least one more on my imminent watch list. BONES has almost become to anime like CLAMP has become to manga - I almost get attracted to a series based solely on who creates it and not necessarily what I’ve read about it. So far, that’s worked out reasonably well.

General Stuff

Sorry about not doing the anime and manga releases this week. I’ll combine it with next week’s when I do that one.

I’d do it now but I have two series I really should review, so I’ll do one tonight and hopefully one tomorrow.

Also, don’t forget about Angelic Layer on Anime Network on Demand. New episodes come out Thursday, and it is up to episode 3 now. You can still view episodes 1 and 2 as well.

Angelic Layer on Anime Network on Demand

Angelic LayerOK, I know there is a lot of stuff on demand, but If I ever see anything that I like or have reviewed, I’ll try to point it out. Starting today, August 10th, Anime on Demand is starting a weekly release of Angelic Layer episodes on it’s video on demand service.

As a result, episode 2 will be available August 17th, episode 3 on August 24th, episode 4 on August 31st, etc. Each episode is available for four weeks, so you’ll actually have four episodes available at a time to watch.

Of course It’s sad that I watched an episode of an Anime on video on demand despite the fact that I own it, but I kind of see it this way: it’s uncut and commercial free when it’s on demand anyway, so I don’t really lose anything, and there just seems to be something about watching an anime you like coming across your TV cable than coming out of your DVD player. Perhaps its the feeling of relief that you’re not the only person who knows about or likes that series (even though Angelic Layer is moderately popular anyway).

Of course, Angelic Layer may be the only series that I’ve completed before that I’ll see on Anime Network VOD just because it’s one of the few ADV series I’ve seen (despite the fact that they’re the largest anime licenser. Geneon/Pioneer wins hands down as the company I’ve viewed the most products from).

Other ADV products I’ve seen are The Place Promised in our Early Days and Neon Genesis Evangelion (so basically 3 out of 32 series I’ve completed). However, I have started renting Kaleido Star, which is also ADV and which is also on anime network VOD. I just haven’t caught up to it yet. I am also starting to watch This Ugly Yet Beautiful World on Anime Network VOD, though I’m not sure when episode 3 is coming, since it’s not on the release schedule for August.

The only issue I have with VOD is that, since I only got it starting a couple months ago, most series are still in the middile - there are very few series which have actually started since I’ve gotten it, and most of the ones I’ve seen the first episode of, I’ve either disliked or are lukewarm on it.

One Year

On August 6, 2005, I popped Volume 1 of DNA2 into my DVD player. That disk was the first one I watched after starting renting from Blockbuster online, and is the first time that I voluntarily chose to watch an anime series while realizing that it was an anime series. It was, by most accounts, the start of my anime viewing.

So, how far have I gotten in 1 year? I’ve rated 17 anime series or movies (of course, this site has only been up for the last 6 of those 12 months). I’ve completed 14 others, and I’m currently watching 9 more.

If my counting is correct, in the past year I have watched 503 anime episodes or movies for a total of something around 200 to 215 hours of shows (or between 8 and 9 days).

I own 9 anime series and part of another as well as 2 movies:

- Ah! My Goddess: The Movie
- Ai Yori Aoshi / Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi
- Angelic Layer
- Cardcaptor Sakura - Clow Book (Season 1)
- Chobits
- DNA2
- Fruits Basket
- Koi Kaze
- The Place Promised in our Early Days
- Please! Twins
- Last Exile
- The World of Narue

There are also several shows on my to-get list:

Not finished, but I know I’ll buy it
Cardcaptor Sakura - Sakura Book
I”s Pure

It’s either still too expensive or I just haven’t gotten around to buying it
Howl’s Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

Licenced but not released
Rumbling Hearts (Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien)

Not licenced yet
I”s Pure
Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
