Review

Ah! My Goddess: Fighting Wings is a story that largely centers around the Valkyrie Lind, who has been tapped to protect the four Goddesses on earth and to search for the “Angel Eater,” a mysterious being which has been eating all of the goddess’ angels, debilitating them.

This was a pretty entertaining 2-episode TV special meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ah! My Goddess franchise. This special isn’t really for someone who is trying to introduce themselves to the franchise, as an understanding of the world is assumed in this special. Otherwise, however, if you are familiar with the franchise, the quality and entertainment value from this special is comparable to that of the TV series which has aired previously. This includes a good mix of drama and comedy, as is the norm in most of the action-based story arcs in the series.

If you like the Ah! My Goddess franchise and enjoyed the TV series, I’m sure that you would enjoy this short special as well.

Funimation takes over anime, aquires THIRTY ADV Titles

I’m guessing this is all part of the fallout between ADV and their licensing partner Sojitz as many of the titles on this list were on the list of suspended shows in February:

  • 009-1
  • Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy
  • Air Gear
  • Air: The Movie
  • Air TV
  • Blade of the Phantom Master
  • Comic Party: Revolution
  • Coyote Ragtime Show
  • Devil May Cry
  • Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor TV
  • Jing, King of Bandits: Seventh Heaven
  • Jinki:Extend
  • Kanon
  • Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora (once titled as Shattered Angels by ADV Films)
  • Le Chevalier D’Eon
  • Magikano
  • Moeyo Ken TV
  • Moonlight Mile
  • Murder Princess
  • Nerima Daikon Brothers
  • Pani Poni Dash!
  • Project Blue Earth SOS
  • Pumpkin Scissors
  • Red Garden
  • Sgt. Keroro 1st & 2nd
  • Tokyo Majin
  • UFO Princess Valkyrie
  • Utawarerumono
  • Venus Versus Virus
  • The Wallflower
  • Welcome to the NHK
  • Xenosaga

All titles were on the list in February except for Shattered Angels, which was licensed after the snafu, Murder Princess, who previously hadn’t had a licensed announced for it, and Sgt. Keroro, possibly because it had no scheduled releases yet.

Shows on the list in February which are not on the list above include 5 Centimeters Per Second, Best Student Council, Ghost Train, Innocent Venus, Kurau: Phantom Memory, and Synethesia, so they are reportedly staying with ADV Films.

The bad thing for ADV in this deal is that it is quite possible that ADV didn’t get a penny from the transfer since the Japanese company they were partnering with held the actual licenses.  This could also be why ADV is in a hurry to license so many new shows, so they have a stream of income to replace these shows, since these constitute the bulk of all the shows that ADV has released over the past couple of years.

Ah! My Goddess (TV) Review Update

Instead of posting a brand new review, I thought I’d put up a post about my updating the Ah! My Goddess (TV) review to include the 2nd season. I briefly thought about posting the whole thing, but then I’d have it twice in the system, so I thought I’d just link to where it already is. Not much has changed though I don’t think.

Two years of Anime

Two years ago today, I received the first disc in my then-new Blockbuster Online rental subscription. I stuck the disc into my DVD player, not really knowing what to expect. This was my first time, after all.

U.S. Manga Corp’s animated M.D. Geist flashed on the screen and then the music of Blurry Eyes by L’Arc~en~Ciel started playing on the DVD menu for Volume of DNA2, and thus my journey down the road of anime began.

I went back and looked at some of the stats I wrote up in the One Year post I did, well, one year ago, and this is what I came up with:

So, how far have I gotten in 1 year? I’ve rated 17 anime series or movies (of course, this site has only been up for the last 6 of those 12 months). I’ve completed 14 others, and I’m currently watching 9 more.

If my counting is correct, in the past year I have watched 503 anime episodes or movies for a total of something around 200 to 215 hours of shows (or between 8 and 9 days).

I own 9 anime series and part of another as well as 2 movies

Well, that list of 17 reviewed series has now turned into 55 reviewed series. 31 completed anime series has turned into 67 completed series, and the 40 series that I’ve seen in whole or in part has expanded to 83 series (not including series I’ve only seen 1 episode of).

My anime library’s has continued to grow as well, going from the 9 series and 2 movies from a year ago to 21 complete series and 4 movies with 2 series in progress.

At this time last year, I estimated I had watched 503 episodes or movies, for a total of 200 to 215 hours of total shows watched. Now, I estimate that I’ve seen (if my math is correct, and not counting series I’ve only seen one episode of) 1,167 episodes or movies for a total of 470 to 475 hours (or 19 to 20 days) of total anime hours (not counting watching a series more than once).

Actually, at this pace, within 2 or 3 full season series, I should break 500 hours of non-repeated anime hours watched. I’m not sure I should be happy or sad about that though lol.

In any case, I also came up with this list last time around too:

There are also several shows on my to-get list:

Not finished, but I know I’ll buy it
Cardcaptor Sakura - Sakura Book
I”s Pure

It’s either still too expensive or I just haven’t gotten around to buying it
Howl’s Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away

Licenced but not released
Rumbling Hearts (Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien)

Not licenced yet
I”s Pure
Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Well, obviously Melancholy has been licensed, and so has Kashimashi, and those, incidentally, are the two series I’m in the middle of collecting. I”s Pure still hasn’t been licensed, and I have indeed bought the rest of the Cardcaptor Sakura series, as well as Rumbling Hearts. I still haven’t bought any of those 2 movies, though (the two new movies from last year are the two CCS movies).

At first, I thought my list this year would be smaller, but I guess it’s not, really:

I’m not sure if anything is in the “not finished but I know I’ll buy” category. If I had to pick a couple, I’d say Moonphase and Idolmaster Xenoglossia.

Other than that, in the “not licensed yet” category, I’d definitely put Kanon 2006, and I”s Pure would stay there, of course.

In the “too expensive to buy” category, I’d probably put Fullmetal Alchemist and Shakugan no Shana, and I just as well throw in Ah! My Goddess and Kaleido Star New Wings as well (though New Wings is coming out in a thinpack box set in September, so I should be able to afford it then).

In any case, that is my two year of anime wrapup post. I’ll probably put another post like this up next year…which will actually be the day before I would leave to go to Otakon 2008, now that I think of it. Otakon 2008 will essentially be a 3 year of anime celebration for me I guess.

New Feature! - Anime Credits

Tuesday already has it’s own thing - Anime and Manga releases which recently I have been able to keep up with for the most part. So, I’m adding another feature: Anime credits. This will feature opening and closing credit sequences from various anime. So far I have 25 collected on YouTube, so I have a good backlog of them, and I’ll randomly select a new one to post each week.

So, on to week one, and the winner is a credit sequence from an anime (well, a season of an anime) which I haven’t even seen yet - I just ran into it searching on YouTube:

Ah! My Goddess Ending Credit Sequence #4

Even if we just laughed a little together shyly
Our linked handsWill definitely overflow
With premonitions of love

After all, it beyond any doubt that
We are indeed lovers

Review

Ah! My Goddess is about a college student, Keiichi Morisato, who accidentally calls the Goddess Help Line and is granted a wish by the Goddess Belldandy. Believing that it’s a joke and thinking about the fact that he hasn’t had much girl luck, Keiichi wishes for the beautiful goddess to stay by his side forever. Belldandy responds that his wish has been granted, much to his surprise. However, Keiichi’s dorm doesn’t allow women, and this fact in combination with heaven’s ultimate force, which is a force that gets invoked if there is anything that may result in a goddess’s wish from taking effect, starts a chain of events which results in Keiichi being evicted from his dorm.

The series then follows Belldandy and Keiichi’s life and the growth in their relationship, as well as the constant addition of goddesses, including Belldandy’s two sisters, Urd and Skuld, as well as Belldandy’s rival Peorth, as well as Keiichi’s little sister Megumi and a pair of demons in Marllar and Hild.

The story, centering more around telling Belldandy’s and Keiichi’s lives, is told more with more of stories-of-the-week as opposed to having an overriding plot which drives the story. There are recurring themes that come up, such as Marller trying to get at Belldandy or Sayoko trying to lure Keiichi away, but they’re usually sub-plots that only occur every now and then and last one, and perhaps two, episodes. This leads to the feeling that the series is just kind of riding along, but not necessarily accomplishing anything, and has created an artificial ending to both seasons and the series as a whole so far.

This doesn’t mean that the series is without worth, however. Most stories told in individual episodes are well-told however, and are usually entertaining and often humorous and can sometimes lead to significant development for a character or the development of Belldandy’s and Keiichi’s relationship, and whenever we did pick up on a previously used plot-line, new episodes did at least often follow from past ones.

The thought that animation of the series was pretty good, though not mind-blowing. The music was also good and fit the series and individual scenes very well. The only other weak point may be the English dub, though it does get better as the series progresses I thought.

Overall, Ah! My Goddess will probably be enjoyed by fans of the franchise, but I think is an overall average series otherwise. I still think it is worth the watch, but there is certainly still a lot that could have been done to make it better.

One Year

On August 6, 2005, I popped Volume 1 of DNA2 into my DVD player. That disk was the first one I watched after starting renting from Blockbuster online, and is the first time that I voluntarily chose to watch an anime series while realizing that it was an anime series. It was, by most accounts, the start of my anime viewing.

So, how far have I gotten in 1 year? I’ve rated 17 anime series or movies (of course, this site has only been up for the last 6 of those 12 months). I’ve completed 14 others, and I’m currently watching 9 more.
