Review

Doujin Work is about a girl, Najimi Osana, who finds out that two of her friends – Tsuyuri, who she knows from college, and Justice, who is a childhood friend – draw doujinshi for a living.

Having just been fired from her part-time job, Najimi decides to earn her millions by drawing doujinshi too, even though both Tsuyuri and Justice try to tell her that it’s not all that profitable. Najimi has two problems, however: she can’t draw, and she gets incredibly embarrassed when dealing with perverted things.

With the help of Tsuyuri, Justice, Hoshi, a boy who becomes her first fan, and Kaneru, a friend and rival of Najimi’s in trying to find success in the doujin world, Najimi attempts to become a successful doujin artist.

Doujin Work
starts off on a pretty good roll, hitting you up with one good perverted joke after another. However, in the last quarter or so of the series, it seems to start losing some of its momentum.

Probably the best thing about the story itself is that the development of Najimi as a doujin artist seems realistic, as she struggles through most of the series just to sell her books, as one would probably expect for a beginner who hasn’t really gotten the hang of things yet. It’s not necessarily the best story you’ll see, but I wouldn’t really consider it bad either.

On technical aspects, probably the weakest aspect is the animation. While it was done in a particular style intentionally, at times the lack of budget definitely shows through. The music is also only so-so, though not bad.

Overall, if you’re looking for a quick laugh (the 12 episodes are only half-episodes), and don’t necessarily care about having excellent animation, then you may not mind taking a look at Doujin Work.

Doujin Work licensed? Plus Genshiken 2

Doujin WorkAnime News Network reports that in an AnimeonDVD forum discussion, Media Blasters CEO John Sirabella announced that they would license Genshiken 2 and seemed to indicate that they had licensed Doujin Work - and not just for a subtitle-only release but for a full dub as well.

Genshiken 2 certainly isn’t a surprise, given that Media Blasters has already released the first Genshiken series and has already licensed the Genshiken OVA and Kujibiki Unbalance.

Genshiken 2However, for the first license to come out of the Summer 2007 season (that I can think of) to be for Doujin Work, well, let’s just say that Doujin Work was about the last series I expected to be licensed out of that group, considering it’s length (12 14-minute episodes), it’s subject matter (doujin), and it’s quality (eh, could be better).

In any case, I guess that ends my watching Genshiken 2 on the side now that it’s licensed, and I guess it depends how much Doujin Work will be selling for before I know whether I’d buy it or not.

Late Season Episodes

I can tell that I’m going to be driven crazy now that all of these spring and summer series are heading towards their conclusions. The two shows that I think I’ll go craziest over are School Days and Idolmaster Xenoglossia, as all hell as now broken lose in both of those series.

Luckily for School Days, we now have what looks like a very reliable speed sub group taking it on, and they appear to at least know how to write English, so that’s good. That means less waiting time to get more of that.

Idolmaster is, well, behind but not as behind as they used to be. Serin is still 2 episodes behind on getting it out, but once again it took 10 days between releases. I’d download the raws, and if this were earlier in the season I might, but I don’t want to be half-spoiled about what happens by watching the episode but have no idea what people are saying.

As for other series, none of them are really heading towards any sort of major ending as far as I can see. Nagasarete Airantou has the potential for a significant ending, but we’ll see what they do. Lucky Star will probably just end with graduation. As for Seto no Hanayome…well, well see. Doujin Work will probably have some sort of cute ending. Sky Girls is supposed to be a full season I think, so we’ll have to wait until December or January or thereabouts before seeing how it ends. For Moetan, Nanatsuiro Drops, and Umisho - I don’t really give a flying flip for the most part.
