First Impressions: Sasameki Koto

230px-Sasameki_Koto_vol01If you like yuri romance series, then this is the show for you.  I have mixed feelings about this series so far.  The first episode was really good (although maybe a little TOO melodramatic), and the second season kinda went the way of the trap.  However, I still like the subtle way that they handle the feelings in this show, the sideways glances, etc.  The art is good, but not spectacular, and the story seems decent so far.  It’s a very similar setup to Aoi Hana where one friend likes the other but can’t say it.  The colors are more vibrant than Aoi Hana, though, and to me the characters seem more likable.

I liked the fact that the boy who likes Sumika has already told her, knows that she actually likes Ushio, and everything is out in the open.  That alone puts it above other series where everything is left up to misunderstandings and misconceptions. Nothing drives me more crazy than a series where you spend 13 episodes before someone confesses, or doesn’t due to some lame circumstance.  Hopefully this series avoids that as it appears to be.  I’m out!

First Impressions: Asura Cryin’ 2

Asura Cryin' 2Josh – I guess I didn’t have to do a first impressions post for this, since this is the direct continuation of the first season, but since it’s “new,” I thought I would.  The first episode ended up being a fairly light-hearted re-introduction to the series, but we’re already back into the serious stuff in the 2nd episode.  One of the things I like about this series is that it’s able to mix seriousness and comedy reasonably well, though it could certainly do better at it as well.

I had some grave doubts about this series the last time I wrote about it, 5 episodes into the first season, but I think some of the writing and shear confusion has been cleared up, or at least there is a clear hope that things will eventually get answered, which is more than I could say then.  I’d still say that Asura Cryin’ overall is only about an average show, but I think it still has the potential to be pretty good or crash and burn at this point.

First Impressions: Nyan Koi

Nyan-KoiPolaryzed – I’ve finished the first 3 episodes of this show and I must say that I think this series gets my Surprise Hit of the Season Award.  Originally I had this on my pass list.  Come on, a kid starts talking to cats and it’s supposed to be good?!  Well, it IS!  The characters are great and likable, the writing is good, the jokes are funny, it’s silly but not over the top, and the dialogues with Junpei and the cats are awesome.  I’m definitely watching this one to the end.

It has a touch of romance, decent comedy that isn’t based purely on fan service, and the animation is crisp and, so far, consistent.  Pairing wise, I’m definitely on the Junpei x Sumiyoshi boat.  Kaede is kind of annoying and a little to perfect for my tastes.  Give me an oppai tsundere tomboy any time over that.  Based on the OP, there are a few more characters to get introduced (including what look like twins), so I hope it doesn’t turn out to be too much of a harem.  Time will tell I guess.  Check it out.
