It’s Sweet Blue Flowers episode 2, and get your relationship chart makers ready, because we’re ready to draw lines everywhere on it.  Meanwhile, Akira and Fumi are both deciding what clubs they want to join.

At school, Ikumi and Akira discuss what clubs they might want to join, with Akira saying that she wants to join something that makes her look like a “proper little girl” and finally settles on the Drama Club, along with Ikume. Meanwhile, Yoko tries to persuade Fumi to join the Matsuoka drama club but fails again. Out in the hallway, Fumi meets a tall, handsome girl coming out of the Literacy Club room and decides to join that club. However, the next day she finds out that the girl, Yasuko Sugimoto, is actually on the basketball team and was just visiting her friend in the room, so Fumi changes her club form to the Basketball team instead.

While hanging out in Fumi’s room after school one day, Akira tells Fumi that she should get a cell phone so they can text. Suddenly, they hear Chizu’s fiance arrive, which causes Fumi to break down in front of Akira. That night, Fumi asks Akira, who is sleeping over, if she’ll sleep next to her. All of this makes Akira ponder what Fumi’s relationship with Chizu was like.

Soon, it’s time for Chizu’s wedding, and Fumi fakes being sick so she can get out from going to it. However, Akira then calls to see if she wants to go out, so Fumi enthusiastically does. While out, they talk about their club activities, including the fact that Akira’s drama club is putting on the plays “The Little Prince,” “Little Women,” and “Wuthering Heights.”

Back at school, Fumi wants to tell Yasuko that she doesn’t want to be part of the basketball club anymore, but before she can say something, Yasuko asks Fumi if she likes acting and shows her the same drama flyer that Akira had shown her the day before. Meanwhile, Ikumi finds a letter in her locker, but she says that she already has someone she likes.

The next day, the Matsuoka drama club plus Fumi and Yasuko (who both have now apparently joined the drama club) go to visit the Fujigaya drama club, since the two schools are apparently collaborating on the plays (at the very least Wuthering Heights since Yasuko is supposed to play the role of Heathcliff). However, Yasuko and Ikumi know each other, and later we see Ikumi coming out of the room with Yasuko crying, which Fumi happens to see.

OK, let’s see if I can get everything straight here, including the relationship chart:

  • it seems increasingly clear that Fumi had more than cousinly feelings (at the very least) towards her cousin Chizu, since she obviously is having very adverse reactions to her getting married, and the fact that she feels “betrayed” and some of the apparent flashbacks really support that some form of relationship existed between the two.
  • Then of course we have the thus far friends-only relationship between Fumi and Akira.
  • Then we have the friendship between Akira and Ikumi, which it seems Akira is sort-of kind of maybe wishing was more than just friends.
  • Then we have the relationship between Fumi and Yasuko, which seems to be on the level of an admirational type relationship of Fumi towards Yasuko.
  • Finally, we have the relationship between Yasuko and Ikumi, which appears to be at some stage past the “just friends” stage since Yasuko is asking Ikumi if she wants to play Catherine, Heathcliff’s foster sister, in Wuthering Heights because Yasuko is playing Heathcliff.

All that gives us a nice love pentagon, and that’s not even taking into account possible future participants such as Yoko, though there doesn’t seem to be any romantic vibes in her friendship with Fumi as of yet.

There was also a thing at the start of this episode that I just cut out of the recap just for space reasons, and that dealt with Fumi realizing that she didn’t really remember the things Akira liked from before, but that seemed to either get resolved or dropped pretty quickly. Most of the rest of the episode dealt with Akira and especially Fumi’s decisions about what club they wanted to join. It seems that Fumi has decided, despite everything before, to join the drama club after all, though this appears because of Yasuko more than anything.

I guess the biggest most immediate issue at hand is what is Ikumi’s relationship with Yasuko, and why was she crying when she was leaving the room? Is it some sort of “I love you, but, we’re girls!” thing or Ikumi liking Yasuko but Yasuko being like “I’m just not that into you” or what? And of course, we’ve set ourselves up for much angst and anguish in the future too. I mean, how can one not with a yuri love pentagon?

“and the fact that she feels “betrayed” and some of the apparent flashbacks really support that some form of relationship existed between the two.”

It was indeed a flashback, to Fumi’s first time (having sex) with Chizu. I thought it was pretty clear, but I suppose not everyone is used to Aoi Hana’s subtle way of revealing things.

Any sort of geometric yuri shape is acceptable.
