Tony Stone, enraged about the assassination of his wife, son, and much of his gang, decides to get back at Inferno. Tony believes that most of Inferno’s members as simply members of various mafia’s who have secretly turned against their organizations. He believes that if this can be exposed, the individual mafias will clean out their own organizations, taking out the trouble members, and gutting Inferno.

Getting wind of Tony Stone’s plan, Inferno calls an emergency meeting. Along the way, Mr. McGwire, the head of Inferno, much to Claudia’s consternation, decides that Scythe Master should become a regular member of Inferno’s meetings.

At the meeting Scythe Master comes up with a bold plan: Use Ein and Zwei to assassinate the leaders of Inferno’s six biggest west coast mafia rivals, but do so in a way that frames Tony’s gang. Then they can assassinate Tony himself by using his bribed second in command and a corrupt police officer, who can claim that he killed Tony to stop the gang wars.

The end result of this plan is that Tony’s gang is wiped out, giving Inferno control over Melanie Square, which was their goal all along, while also taking out the leader of most of the rest of their west coast rivals and bringing the remnants of their mafia organizations under the Inferno umbrella.

I guess this was a so-so episode. It was continuing the plot line started in the last episode, but that was largely it. However, there are two things to note that might come back later.

In a previous episode, we saw the beginnings of a difference in worldview between Ein and Zwei, and it expands in this episode. Based on Claudia’s prompting, Zwei starts to try to comprehend the reasoning and consequences of the mission they are given, but Ein frowns at this, saying that their only purpose is to “function” and that thinking will destroy both of them – a view which Scythe Master seems to favor.

This could be a sort of proxy battle between Claudia and Scythe Master in controlling Ein and Zwei – a battle which is also expressed in Lizzie being uncomfortable in following Scythe Master’s orders, when she’ll gladly follow Claudia’s. I have a feeling that eventually there is going to be a major break in Claudia’s and Scythe Master’s relationship, and it isn’t going to be pretty. Unfortunately for Claudia, it seems like McGwire seems to be favoring Scythe Master at the moment due to Ein and Zwei’s success.
