After watching the first two episodes, this series looks like it has some potential to be a pretty good series, as long as it doesn’t fall into the trap of a predictable “monster of the week” type series.
In this series, humans and youkai have long lived together on earth, though usually not all that peacefully. As a result, the town of Sakurashin was established as a place where youkai and humans could live together harmoneously.
To keep the peace, the town has an organization called the Youkai Life Consultation Office which consists of 4 members: Hime, who some of the members call the “Mayor” (though I’m unsure whether she actually is the mayor of the town) and who is a powerful youkai, Kotoha, who is a youkai who can conjur up just about anything, Ao, a youkai who can read minds, and Akina, a human who is the only person in the town who can use “tuning” - a method through which bad or out of control youkai can be sent back to their dimension.
So far, it looks like some bad youkai dude is trying to cause problems with the Nana-gou trees around the town which are meant to keep bad things out, but what exactly his goal is, I’m not sure.
In any case, this series seems to have some interesting characters in it and the first two episodes look promising, so I’m hoping for the best with this series.
To Aru Majutsu no Index, or A Certain Magical Index, is about a girl, Index, who is being chased around by a bunch of magicians because she’s memorized the contents of some 103,000 books, some of them rare and dangerious and otherwise, in the opinion of the Church, in need of being protected or kept secret.
She runs into Kamiyo, an esper who is the weakest esper around (a Level 0) but whose right hand has the ability to neutralize any supernatural power wieleded by esper or magician alike. Unfortunately for him, this also means that any good luck that God wishes to grace upon him is instantly obliterated by this power as well.
So far the action has been, well, slow and lacking. We’ve had a friend of Kamiyo’s who is a Level 5 esper and who can conjur up an EMP storm like you’ve never seen on demand, and a magician who likes to fling around fire - as well as talk - a lot and who, apparently, can be defeated by a single punch to the head once his magic becomes useless.
After two episodes of this series, Index could be good if the writers want it to be, but it could also be a big waste of time pretty easily. What fun is a good old supernatural show if the supernatural part of it is boring or lacking? This is worth watching just to see if it gets better, but I’m not necessarily thrilled with it so far.
Instant Classic. That’s about the best way I can describe Toradora. It takes the best from various anime series and assembles it together into one series. At least that is my impression after watching the first two episodes.
Takasu reminds me of a mix of Hideki from Chobits and Sawamura from Midori Days while Aisaka reminds me of Chiaki from Minami-ke and Shana from Shakugan no Shana merged together into one small, brown haired package of power in a perpetual mad mood (Aisaka having the same voice actress as Shana also helps).
Meanwhile, the story itself has been hilarious so far. There are a couple of characters who may end up being quite abrasive if the show allows them to be, but so far they aren’t too bad. My only worry is that Aisaka will turn into a tsundre pile of goo too early or to a to great of an extent, but her biting personality hopefully suggests otherwise, while Takasu, despite being a seeming loser with girls, seems strong willed enough to stand up to her - at least reasonably well.
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of this series.
