Not sure how the anime will work out, but manga-wise, here are the answers:

1. Because, as you will find out,
A) the spirits aren't exactly ALL evil. Some are lonely, and you know, they deserve their name back.
B)Also because Natsume is only and perhaps also want to meet these creatures.
C) (potential spoiler) His grandma was cruel to these creatures. Nice person as he is, he wants to right the wrong and give back their name, which his grandma "stole" (but again, some spirits are actually quite fond of his grandma).
D) He needs to get rid of the book. He can't just exactly throw it away for the other spirits to take, because they'd then have control of the other spirits. Not good.

2. Answer read above. Also generally because he's a good person?

3. Because the deal with the cat also means that he will get the cat's protection...and so hopefully he won't die. Plus, he's new to this, and the cat does give some nice advice. He'd probably die without him anyway.
