Name: ef – a tale of memories Genre: Drama, Romance Episodes: 12 Released: October 6, 2007 – December 22, 2007 Based On:ef dating sims by Minori Director: Shin Oonuma Produced By: SHAFT US Distribution By: N/A
ef – a tale of memories is a pair of two marginally connected stories about discovering one’s true path in life.
In the first story, Hiro, a high school student who is a freelance mangaka on the side, runs into Miyako one night. The two grow together rather quickly, especially since Miyako is afraid of “being forgotten.” In the meantime, Hiro’s childhood friend, Kei, has a crunch on him and, as a result, tensions between Miyako and Kei soon get tense.
In the second story, Renji, a boy who just can’t decide what he wants to do in life, meets Chihiro at an abandoned train station. Chihiro, who is Kei’s twin sister, was injured when she was younger and as a result her long term memory has been destroyed and she can only remember things in short term memory for 13 hours. Despite this, Renji tries to get closer to Chihiro and tries to help her in her dream of writing a book.
Episodes of ef tend to switch back and forth between these two stories, and the two stories, other than having Kei and Chihiro being twins, don’t really have anything to do with each other. However, the two stories are both about the main characters figuring out what they really want to do in life. Renji has no idea what he wants while Chihiro believes that she can’t be anything with her handicap. Meanwhile Hiro is trying to balance being a mangaka and school work to the detriment of both, with Kei and Miyako pull him in different directions on that front.
One of the amazing things about this series, though, is that despite switching between stories, I still found myself engrossed in each episode, and when we moved from one story, it just made me anticipate returning to the other story that much more.
On the technical aspects, both animation and music are spectacular in this series and it is overall one of the best series that I can remember watching overall. There are few weaknesses to be found in this series.
If you’re interested in watching a good romance-drama, then I would definitely recommend checking out ef – a tale of memories.
