Special A - Episode 13

It’s Special A episode 13, and this week we’re greeted with new shit a new opening and ending song. Also, the Special A class is forced to go to “normal” high school for 3 days.

  • Akira chills at home when she gets a box from the school’s chairwoman. In it is a regular school uniform and a note telling her (and the rest of the Special A) that they are to attend a “regular” high school as assigned by the chairwoman for three days. Oh yeah, and they have to do it or else they’ll be booted from the S.A.
  • When they get to school, they find out that Hikari and Akira are in one class, Kei, Tadashi, and Jun are in another class, and Ryuu and Megumi (woo! woo!) are in the 3rd class.
  • Suddenly a girl arrives in Akira’s class and Akira thinks it’s a girl she knew long ago, but when she introduces herself (she’s Yui), Akira realizes that it must be a different person. However, Yui’s similarity to the girl Akira knew, a girl who for some reason turned against her, is too much, and Akira instinctively slaps away Yui’s hand.
  • Hikari concludes that Akira is in a bad mood because she hasn’t had her tea yet, so she runs off to get some. While Hikari is gone, Yui asks if she and Akira can be friends. Akira then has another flashback to Yahiro basically daring Akira to become friends with “her” and Akira says “no” partly in response to her flashback, but Yui takes it as “no, I won’t be your friend.”
  • During the next break, Tadashi shows up and notices that Akira is down. However, he very untactfully asks Akira if it’s “girl’s day,” earning him a nice hard slap to the face. Then Kei swings by and Tadashi asks him to help Akira get along with the class better. However, Kei sees Yui and suddenly realizes what the problem is: Akira has frozen up in fear because Yui closely resembles Akira’s old friend.
  • Yui then once again approaches Akira and apologizes for anything she might have done wrong. Kei reminds Akira that “the past is not the present,” and this convinces Akira to…call her people to bring enough cars to truck her entire class to have a tea party at her house.
  • At the tea party, Akira apologizes to everyone, and especially Yui, for being so rude earlier, and asks Yui to be her friend, which Yui accepts.
  • It is then explained that Akira always played with Kei and Yahiro when her parents were at work. While Kei kept to himself, Yahiro often ordered Akira around, including telling her not to make friends with anyone else. Even if Akira tried making friends, the other students would be afraid of what Yahiro would do to them.
  • One day, a girl, Sayo, got lost in Akira’s yard and the two became friends. However, Yahiro then somehow turned Sayo against Akira, destroying the two’s friendship.
  • Meanwhile, Yahiro has somehow found out what the S.A. are up to and even has gotten all the class rosters for the school, and remarks that “this will be fun” when he sees that Yui is in Akira’s class…

What is it about Special A and having shitty songs? Oh well, at least it’s only the OP and ED. Not that what’s in-between is a hell of a lot better.

OK, exploring Akira’s past seems like a pretty interesting thing to do, and hopefully will add to the story, but there is just something wrong with Akira making up with the class by basically bribing them with a big tea party at her house.

In any case, back to Akira’s past, it’s pretty clear that how Yahiro treated her was pretty traumatic to Akira (well, I guess having him make your first real friend hate you will do that). I’m just curious what eventually caused Kei to stand up to Yahiro in defense of Akira.

I guess this overall wasn’t a bad episode. It seems we’ve been having a few more not-bad episodes recently, as opposed to the horrendous ones at the start of the show. This series is hardly good, but at least it is making progress towards the right direction it seems, even if slowly.
