Shakugan no Shana II - Episode 16

It’s episode 16, and Shana, Yuji, and the others have to deal with the aftermath of the last episode, specifically: what exactly happened to Yuji. Meanwhile, Yoshida has received a treasure from Pheles, and it looks like it’s going to be a blast for Yoshida to use it. Also, Yuji starts training with some heavy weaponry.

The highlights of this episode:

  • It’s the end of the school festival, but no one but Tanaka, Yuji, Yoshida, Shana and (presumably) Satou can remember Fumina, as her existence was absorbed by Hecate.
  • Back at the Bal Masqué headquarters, Bel Peol notes that not being able to destroy Yuji isn’t all that much of a setback, and the professor notes that it may allow him to collect even more data. Hecate then appears to somehow activate the Silver suit by mixing her power of existence with the Silver’s
  • Meanwhile, Yoshida flashes back to the previous night. Before Pheles left, she gave Yoshida a treasure which would instantly call her if Yuji was in trouble. However, the treasure draws it’s power from the power of existence of the human who uses it, killing them. This obviously shocks Yoshida, but Pheles tells Yoshida that she doesn’t belong in their world unless she can use it.
  • That night, Margery runs more tests on Yuji, and sees that the Midnight Lost Child has been sealed and that some sort of transmitter has been implanted. Margery also explains that Johan appears to have appeared by using some of the unrestricted methods Margery was using to try to capture the Silver. Meanwhile, Alastor ponders whether Misaki City is a place that somehow has something that attracts large Denizens and other misfortune to it.
  • The next evening, Wilhelmina asks for Shana and Yuji’s assistance to shift through all the information that Outlaw has been sending her, as it appears to have started to send her just about every piece of information it comes across, whether it is applicable to the Silver and Midnight Lost Child or not. At the same time, Yuji asks Shana if he can use the sword Blutsauger and Alastor consents. Meanwhile, Wilhelmina finds the entire situation with Hecate herself showing up suspicious.
  • Yoshida thinks things over that night and almost throws Pheles’ treasure away when a Fuzetsu suddenly appears. Yoshida then watches Yuji practice using Blutsauger and changes her mind about tossing the treasure away.
  • Meanwhile, Hecate is looking outside from the Bal Masqué headquarters when a bird lands on her hand, and she looks out at it with a sort of amazement when it flies away…

Well, quite a few things happened in this episode, even though it may not be apparent at first.

First, we have Yoshida’s treasure which she received from Pheles, which is now officially the most useless treasure ever. I mean, really. Pheles is basically telling Yoshida to either give up on Yuji or to sacrifice herself for him. Since Yoshida kept it, I assume she’ll eventually use it, which brings up the question of whether it really does what Pheles says it does. Will it really kill her? And if does suck out her power of existence, would Yuji somehow be able to save her?

Second, we have this transmitter inside Yuji now, which appears to have something to do with the Silver. Whether it’s slowly moving pieces of the Silver out of Yuji and into the suit of armor or whether it’s basically allowing the Silver to control the armor by remote control, I’m not sure.

Third, we have Yuji training to use the sword Blutsauger, which will come in handy later if the opening credits can be any indication.

Forth, Wilhelmina has a hunch that something weird is going on for Hecate herself to come and seal off the Midnight Lost Child and wonders what else might be going on. I’m sure the transmitter is part of that, but knowing this series, we’ll be thrown off guard again by something else they have planned.

And Fifth, speaking of Hecate, she seemed to act Fumina-like at the end with the bird. I wonder if Fumina’s memories will start to soften her up somehow. Might that be the biggest twist of all? Hecate switching over to the good side in the end?

We also have a new opening and closing credits this time. While the closing credit song is about normal for Shana, I kind of thought that the new opening credit song was kind of lame. I typically like Kotoko but I don’t know know…it just didn’t seem very intense for a Shana song.

In any case, at least Shana has started to become really intriguing again.
