The highlights of this episode:
- Himura gives Chihiro’s diary back to her so that she may start reading to recover the memories that she’s recorded. While Chihiro is catching up, Himura warns Renji that Chihiro losing her memory has occurred many times in the past and will occur again in the future, and that it will be harder on Renji each time it happens. He suggests that if Renji wants to get out of Chihiro’s life, now is the time to do it, but Renji doesn’t take kindly to this suggestion.
- Kei calls Kyosuke and asks if he can hang out with her. When Kyosuke arrives, Kei explains that she’s restless unless she’s doing something. Kyosuke asks her if something is wrong, since Kei doesn’t seem to “sparkle” like she used to. Kei tells him that she feels like she’s becoming far away from everyone - both Hiro and her sister Chihiro - because they’re doing things they’ve always wanted while she’s just sitting there.
- As Chihiro reads through her diary, she becomes distressed and how terrible her life has been as written in the diary, and yells at Renji that she wished she could put an end to her endless miserable days.
- Hiro meets up with Miyako and apologizes for standing her up on their date, but Miyako says she isn’t angry since he’s there now. Miyako then tells Hiro how she’s jealous how much freedom he has, but Hiro tries to say he doesn’t really have all that much freedom, saying that he can’t run away from things he started. Miyako asks if that includes her, and he basically says yes. In response, Miyako kisses him. The two then decide to go to Hiro’s place.
- At Hiro’s apartment, Hiro and Miyako are sleeping together, and Miyako starts revealing her lonely past, and asks Hiro if he will look only at her, and he says he will.
- The next time Renji sees Chihiro, she is in much better spirits, and tells Renji that she wants to go back to like how she was before. After reading her diary for a third time, Chihiro asks if she’s like her old self, and Renji tells her that she is. Chihiro tells Renji that she hopes she can love her the way she used to. Renji is taken aback by how forward she is, and Chihiro says that, given how many times she wrote in her diary that she loved him, she just assumed she had told Renji.
- Chihiro also tells Renji that, for 4 years in her diary, she wrote as if she was at a dead end, but that she seemed to be more alive after meeting Renji. That evening, Chihiro ponders whether personality and memories are linked, and rhetorically ponders if her old self “died” when she lost her memory. Renji desperately denies that this is the base, but it continues to bother him. He runs across the sand castle the two had made, and destroys it, distressed that Chihiro’s memories are “more fragile than sand.”
- Meanwhile, Kei goes to Hiro’s apartment to wake him up, and sees he and Miyako sleeping together. Kei screams and runs away, with Kyosuke chasing after her…

Well, while it seems that Chihiro is back to normal, Renji seems obviously unnerved by Chihiro’s thought about whether her old self is “dead” once she lost all her memories again. Renji obviously wants to try again with Chihiro, but it looks like it will be a matter of how much emotional pain he can take, which is Himura’s point in warning him.
Meanwhile, Miyako and Hiro finally hook up, much to the horror of Kei. What will happen there? It seems Kei has pretty much lost the battle for Hiro, but will she finally see that Kyosuke is there for her? We have 3 episodes to find out.
