Blue Drop - Episode 09

It’s episode 9 of Blue Drop, and Mari and Hagino go out shopping for the play that Michiko is writing. On the trip, Mari learns more about Hagino. On the way back, they have to take shelter from a rain storm, when Mari learns about what happened to her in the incident 5 years in the past.

Hello? You alive?
Michiko stayed up all night writing anime episode reviews for her blog What do you think of my play?

The highlights of this episode:

  • Michiko describes what she’s written so far to the class: A girl is thrown into prison with a girl, Jeanne d’Arc, who is suspected of being a demon. The girl and Jeanne didn’t get along at first, but then gradually get to know each other better and become fond of each other, giving each other hope, etc. The class responds positively to Michiko’s story.
  • While Hagino leads the class in a discussion of everything they’ll need to buy for the play, Tsubael and Azanael spy in on her using the spy-bird. Azanael, understandably, has no clue why Hagino is hanging out in a school. Tsubael tells her that it’s an investigation, but Azanael finds it hard to believe. Tsubael tells her that Hagino just has her own way of thinking. Meanwhile, the commander of the Novaal waits patiently for Azanael to complete her mission.
  • Hagino and Mari take a train to a nearby city to buy supplies for the play. On the train, Mari asks if the big thing she saw at the end of the first episode was Hagino’s ship. Hagino confirms it is, and Mari remarks that it doesn’t feel like it was the first time she’s seen it. Hagino invites Mari to see it, and Mari then tells her that she feels like she’s known Hagino for a long time as well.
  • After Mari and (mostly) Hagino shop for the supplies, Mari and Hagino ride a nearby ferris wheel. During the ride, Mari asks Hagino if they want to walk home. Hagino asks why, noting that it’d take 3 hours, but eventually agrees to.
  • As Tsubael continues to eavesdrop on Hagino, Azanael asks whether this is a “regular” part of the mission too, but Tsubael tells her that this is part of her own personal mission. However, she does note that, since meeting Mari, Hagino has been able to “smile naturally” now.
  • On Hagino and Mari’s walk back, it starts raining, and they take shelter in an abandoned restaurant. Once inside, Mari realizes that she left the paper bag outside after they ran to get cover, and feels depressed by ruining much of what they had bought.
  • While they wait out the rain, Hagino starts talking to Mari about herself. She tells her that on their planet, everyone is female. She explains that they’ve been able to find ways to reproduce up until how, but that they are well aware that they are still in a perilous situation, and that’s why they came to Earth. However, Mari falls asleep before Hagino is finished with her story.
  • Hagino falls asleep and suddenly Mari reveals a latent power of telepathy and the two start sharing a dream about what happened on the island 5 years prior. Hagino flies around, horrified by the destruction that the Emul Force drive incident has caused when she sees a life form on her scope in the water. She jumps in to save the life form - Mari. This is apparently going on at the same time as Onomil’s incident while trying to fix the Emul Force drive.
  • The pair suddenly wake up and Mari realizes that it was Hagino that saved her from the island incident. Azanael, who was apparently able to drop in on the dream with Tsubael via the telepathy link, becomes enraged about Hagino having saved Mari while Onomil went to her death trying to save the ship…

Doesn't Hagino look younger now? Isn't this like my dream?
Hagino: still troubled

Well, Azanael is pissed now. While before it seemed like Hagino was the one begging Onomil not to go into the engine room, it was apparently Tsubael, as Hagino was out saving Mari at the time. It’s definitely a “you didn’t save my bed-buddy so you could save one of THEM!” moment. Also, after having just wiped out 1000 people who whatever, Hagino definitely didn’t seem to be in a very correct state of mind while flying around, either.

We’ve also found out one thing that’s different about Mari - her up-until-now latent telepathy. Apparently that doesn’t even to be something that the aliens have. We also learn why there aren’t any guy aliens - apparently the planet Hagino is from only have females, but they find ways to reproduce. She says that’s the reason they came to earth, so apparently getting it on with other similar species is one way they do it. You’d think they’d come up with some way to do it in a lab too, given their technological level.

We also get more aspects of Hagino. Two episodes ago, it was unsure Hagino (with the baby), last episode it was frustrated Hagino (not realizing that Michiko was troubled), and this time it was annoyed Hagino (with the open window and Mari constant running off while they were shopping). To start off with, Hagino was kind of this perfect, happy girl, but as the series has gone on, she’s become, ironically, more “human.” And how old is Hagino exactly? Let’s make a ridiculous Japanese-eske assumption and say she was the captain of the Blue during the incident when she was 16. Yes, ridiculous, but you’ve seen that before, right? That means she’d be 21 now. I’m suspecting she’s older than that - at least mid-20s would be my guess. We may eventually find out. Maybe not.

And what’s that? Did they say the word “confession” in the preview? How soon before Mari and Hagino jump in the sack? (and what a glorious day that will be!)
