Most of the scenes in this episode are mostly bright, since it's basically character intro and Shion playing shogi. But yes, at least in the first episode, I didn't think the shogi was overwhelming. I mean, they play and people are like *gasp OMGWTFBBQ I can't believe they made that move!" but the shogi takes up only a couple minutes. Well, there are a mix of bright and dark scenes. The fact that shogi doesn't seem to be an overwhelming feature is good because I don't know that much about it. ^^; Based on your write up and screencaps, the artwork seems too perky for something so depressing?
