Nagasarete Airantou - Episode 23

It’s episode 23, and seemingly knowing that School Days 12 would be delayed, Nagasarete Airantou went ahead and aired a school episode of their own. But what’s this? Suzu is content being a moron delinquent? Well, we can’t have that now can we?

The episode starts with Suzu sorting…I guess potatoes…but is having a hard time figuring out how many each person should get. She tries counting on her hands, but her brain melts after running out of fingers. The next morning, Ikuto heads off to go to school, where he teaches match, Chikane teaches language, Shinobu teaches calligraphy, and Machi is the sanitarian teacher. However, we learn that Suzu is one of the few girls on the island who doesn’t attend school. See, Suzu hates studying.

To help resolve this problem, Chikane-sensei has an idea: Use Shinobu, Rin, and Yukino to trick Suzu into going to school. How will they do this? By having Ikuto take Suzu out like they’re going somewhere, but have the trio block off any roads off of the route towards the school. Ikuto doesn’t like the idea of tricking Suzu, but he reluctantly goes along with it.

The next day, Ikuto takes Suzu out for a walk as planned. However, Suzu immediately starts noticing that everyone is acting weird, including Ikuto. After a while, Suzu asks where they’re going, and Ikuto suddenly realizes that he hasn’t thought of where they’re supposed to be going, and Suzu suggests they go to Rin’s.

Once the pair get to the road to Rin’s house, there is a sign that says it’s being worked on, and Ikuto convinces Suzu to keep walking on the road they’re on. Once they pass, Rin comes out, removes the sign, and declares her portion a success. Next, they reach a bridge which is roped off, and again the pair move on. This time it’s Shinobu that pops up and declares success. Next, Yukino and Kuma-Kuma are digging holes in a road. Ikuto sees a sign that they’ve put up directing them towards a detour, so Ikuto and Suzu go that way.

The pair then walk into a trap set up by Chikane: a giant tunnel that Ikuto and Suzu slide and slide and slide down until they land inside the school. Realizing where she is, Suzu makes a run for it and Ikuto chases after her. During her escape, Suzu runs into Rin, Yukino, and Shinobu, and is able to get by all three of them. Ikuto continues to give chase, and is able to keep up with Suzu, but Suzu is too athletic for him to be able to actually catch her.

Suzu starts jumping from tree to tree to stay out of Ikuto’s reach, and so Ikuto tries throwing Tonkatsu at her to knock her down. However, she dodges, but this causes her to jump back towards the ground. Ikuto gets into a position to catch her, but she ends up landing on his head instead. Thinking that Ikuto is out, Suzu decides to run for it, but Ikuto grabs her ankle, causing her to trip. Ikuto then proceeds to tickle Suzu’s feet until she concedes defeat.

Afterwards, Suzu gets mad at Ikuto, thinking that everyone is just making fun of her by trying to make her go to school, since she hates studying. However, Ikuto tells her that everyone is thinking of her and wants to spend time with her, and that’s why they want her to come. This seems to persuade Suzu, who follows Ikuto back to school. Everyone welcomes her back, but only before Chikage drags Suzu off for some learnin’…

Meanwhile, a message in a bottle floats towards the island…

I guess one of the things established in this episode is that Ikuto has truly become Suzu’s equal, as he is the only one who is able to catch her and convince her to go to school. However, what was up with his tickling her feat. Not that it isn’t a good way to make someone submit, but what was up with his face?. He looks like a maniac!

Also, what’s up with that huge tunnel leading to the school. Students probably think that school sits at the gates of Hell, but given how long that tunnel is, for Airantou’s school, that may not be far from the truth, especially since Chikage seems to be the head teacher.

And speaking of that, shouldn’t the adults be teaching? Ware are Chikage, Ikuto, Machi, and Shinobu teaching? They’re at best in their late teens or early 20s. Do they just stop teaching after middle school?

In any case, this was a so-so episode I thought, but other than the Ikuto-is-equal-than-Suzu thing, didn’t seem to reveal all that much, except perhaps Suzu’s insecurity about what the other girls think of her. One cool thing about this episode, though, is how many of the other girls get lines. We had to have somewhere between a half-dozen to dozen girls who we’ve rarely, if ever, seen get lines get some in this episode.

Three more episodes and oh so much left to be resolved. I’m having doubts that we’ll actually be able to get through it all.
