Doujin Work - Episode 08

It’s episode 8, and it’s time to reveal Najimi doujin, Mark II. With a lot of head action. No, not that head…

Meanwhile, Kaneru reveals her new doujin, and reveals a lot more than that in the doujin, as she forgets to include something which the Japanese require. Also, will Hoshi like Najimi’s new doujin, or will his judgment forever crush Najimi’s dreams?

Take Two!
I'm gonna win this time Justice on the Prowl

The episode starts with Najimi and Kaneru running into each other on the train, and the trash talking begins, with Kaneru throwing out insults like “I’ll be sold out by lunch” and Najimi saying that she doesn’t need to sit since she’s “still young.” Once to the comic fest site, the two once again share tables right next to each other.

We then visit Justice and Sora at their circle’s table and they’ve already sold half of their Doujin, but Justice appears lost in thought. He tells Sora that he’s worried about Najimi’s new book, and recalls back to when Najimi showed it to him and Tsuyuri. They note that she drew all the character faces at the same angle - and only drew faces - there are no bodies. Justice correctly assesses that Najimi could only draw faces at that angle well and thus…she went with her strength. However, they note that not many people will be fooled.

Meanwhile, back at their table, Tsuyuri has sold out and asks how Najimi and Kaneru are doing. Unfortunately, neither have sold a single book. Najimi asks if they want to look at each other’s books. Kaneru looks at Najimi’s first and is impressed how well drawn it is. Tsuyuri tries to tell her not to be fooled, since all the faces are drawn the same way, but Kaneru is just even more impressed with Hajimi’s genius to play to her strength. Tsuyuri strikes the final blow, however, noting that, even though it’s an ero manga, since there are no bodies, it really isn’t ero.

Najimi decides to take a look at Kaneru’s book next, and instantly blushes. Kaneru says she hopes it’s more perverted than Najimi’s. Tsuyuri tells her that yes, it is more perverted: in fact it’s so perverted that it won’t well - she forgot to include the mosaics. Tsuyuri goes off and corrects all of Kaneru’s manga “through magic” and she is able to sell them once again.

Finally, Hoshi swings by Najimi and Kaneru’s table. He takes a look at Kaneru’s first, and while he doesn’t seem to enjoy it all that much, he tells her that she drew it well and buys a copy - Kaneru’s first ever doujin sale! Hoshi looks at Najimi’s doujin next. However, Hoshi is unhappy with it, and says that it just looks like Najimi is afraid of failure, and that while her last work wasn’t drawn as well, that she at least tried on it, and he ends up running away without buying a copy. Kaneru is about to gloat that Hoshi only bought a copy of hers when she turns and sees a group of guys buying Najimi’s doujin, shocking her in disbelief.

Finally Justice swings by to check up on things, and Najimi tells him that she sold 5 copies. Najimi tries to boastfully comfort Kaneru who only sold one copy, but she just retorts that Hoshi buying one of her copies is worth more than the 5 copies Najimi sold. After the sale, Tsuyuri asks Najimi what she feels about her “victory,” and Najimi says she’s disappointed Hoshi didn’t buy one, and that she’ll have to try harder next time.

A lack of variety
Judgment Day The Scores are In
Hard Sell So what about you selling 50 times as many copies as me?
This really sucks!
Very H You forgot your mozaics...
I agree. This sucks. They don't think it sucks, however.
Let me help you create some material for next time

I thought that this was a pretty good episode, with Najimi learning that just because something is drawn well doesn’t automatically make it better than something that isn’t drawn as well, but is still created better. As a result, Hoshi doesn’t buy a copy of her book, and her “victory” over Kaneru kind of rings hollow.

I’ll be interested to see what Mark 3 of Kaneru’s and Najimi’s doujin will be like, and how much they’ll each improve. I also liked the fact that this series isn’t just like “Wow! You became a master overnight and sold 5,000 copies!” Najimi really has to try and slug to even sell just a handfull of copies.
