Episode 5 arrives, and this time it’s a swimming episode, so it is a fan-service fest this week too. The amount of fan service has been increasing over the episodes, much to the detriment of the series I think, and the the very nature of this episode screams fan service, so if you’re annoyed by it, just bear through it. Most of the good stuff is at the end this week anyway as Makoto finally scores! But with who?
Oh yeah, and plenty of Setsuna staring action in this episode as well.

The first part of the episode basically goes over Hikari, one of Sekai’s friend, wanting Taisuke to go to the poll with them because she has a crush on them, along with a lot of fan service and the like. Once at the pool, Kotonoha says she can’t swim, so Makoto says that he’ll teach her. To try to lure in Taisuke, Hikari also says she can’t swim, but has to drag Taisuke with her to get him to help her learn. From this point, we do various swimming things for a while, and Kotonoha hugging Makoto in her swimsuit and all that fun fan-servicy stuff.
Finally we start getting into the beef of the episode with a conversation between Makoto and Sekai while Kotonoha is off doing…something. Sekai tells him that he saw Makoto hugging Kotonoha in the middle of the pool and thinks that their “special training” has worked. Makoto then says that he wants to continue the training, but Sekai refuses.
During lunch, we also seem to see that Kotonoha is getting more confidence as, when Taisuke mentions that he thought that Makoto was dating Sekai, Kotonoha is able to say, without any hesitation or embarrassment, that she is the one dating Makoto. However, Kotonoha is the only one of the trio that appears to be happy with this arrangement.
After everyone is done swimming, Kotonoha comes out of the dressing room first and asks Makoto if he wants to come over to her house the following weekend. Makoto stalls giving a response when the three other girls come out. Makoto happily hails Sekai, but Sekai gets mad at him and drags him around a corner to scold him about being too open with other girls. Makoto wonders what she’s talking about, since they did do the “special training” but Sekai tells him that he shouldn’t have taken it seriously, that he’s Kotonoha’s boyfriend, and that he and Sekai are only friends.
Once Kotonoha and Makoto get off at the train station on the way home, Kotonoha wants to hang out some more, but Makoto says that he has to get home. After standing there thinking for a while, Makoto runs back to the train station and text messages Sekai that he wants to meet her. It looks like Sekai may ignore his messages, but she ends up going out to meet him at the train stop near her house anyway.
Sekai asks him why he came, telling him that he’s going out with Kotonoha, but Makoto hugs Sekai and tells her that he likes her. Sekai says that saying that is unfair to Kotonoha and asks Makoto why he tried going after Kotonoha first if he liked her instead. Makoto apologizes to her, and then they kiss. They then go back to Sekai’s place, and appear to have sex.

Well, with this episode, you can basically skip until the 9 minutes mark, since most everything before it is fluff, and the good stuff doesn’t start happening until then. But once it starts, it really gets going.
If this were a normal romance series, and the last third or so of this episode was left off, I’d have half a mind to think we were headed towards Kotonoha/Makoto, Hikari/Taisuke, and Sekai/Setsuna pairings at the end. However, this isn’t a normal romance series, and the last third of the episode happened, so one can probably effectively tear up that scenario up right now, or at least we’re going to have to go through many twists and turns to get there.
Now, Sekai and Makoto sleeping together wouldn’t be such a bad thing is Makoto immediately went back and broke up with Kotonoha. However, it’s already well established that Makoto thinks Kotonoha has a better body, and was probably attracted to her for that reason, and may very well try to stick with her just so he can score with her as well. I think this was reinforced when Makoto hugged Kotonoha harder when she fell into him in the pool. There is obviously little to no emotional attachment for Makoto towards Kotonoha, so that wouldn’t cause him to hug her. The only other reason would be because he likes her big boobs on him.
In any case, Sekai now seems to be the one unsure of herself, as she wants to be with Makoto, but feels jilted from helping Makoto get with Kotonoha only for him to betray Kotonoha for her.
In other relationships, I think I’ve already said that I think Setsuna likes Sekai, and that feeling was only reinforced today. However, she appears to be taking what I’d call the Tomoyo-route, as she tries to get happiness from her feelings, not by pursuing Sekai, but trying to encourage Sekai to be happy in her own right.
We also see that Sekai’s friend Hikari has a thing for Taisuke (something which Makoto, Setsuna, and Sekai all wonder how this could be) so we could have a that relationship going on at the side as well.
After I saw the 5th episode, I had a theory about how the next 4 or 5 episodes would go. Then I saw the 6th episode and my theory was totally destroyed, so I won’t tell you what I was thinking. In any case, Makoto is heading more and more into the abyss.
