In episode 2 of School Days, Makoto very nearly blows it with Kotonoha for being a complete moron on not one, but two dates. It’s only Sekai, once again, that bails him out.
Also, I’ll post screen captures of the opening credits….sometime.

This episode starts with Kotonoha meeting Makoto for a date while Makoto is…reading a dating guide book. Minus 5 points for Makoto before the date even beings. Then during the date, Makoto breaks about every other dating sin that exists: looking at ecchi magazines while on the date, playing video games (by himself), having Kotonoha save him from a big, mean stranger on the street, and finally, trying to grab a kiss even though Kotonoha isn’t interested (and her letting the train door close between them while he’s waiting for the kiss).
The next day, after telling her how it went, Sekai obviously think that Makoto is a blithering moron, and tells him he should understand a girl’s heart better. He said he thought he did, based on the fact that Sekai kissed him the day before. Sekai becomes all flattered and says that it was just a friend’s way of saying hi. Finally, Sekai hands Makoto a pair of movie tickets, and hells him to smooch Kotonoha when the atmosphere is right.
The next day, Makoto and Kotonoha are out on another date, this time at the movies, and there are three movies to choose from: a horror flick, a romance, and some sort of sci-fi movie. Makoto goes for the seemingly obvious date choice: the romance. Unfortunately, Kotonoha wanted to see the horror (Makoto, can’t even catch a break, even when he does something right!).
Makoto pretty much oogles Kotonoha for most of the movie, until he tries to lean over and kiss her again. This time he’s met with a nice solid slap on the face. Afterwards in a diner, Makoto kind of tells Kotonoha what Sekai said earlier. Kotonoha asks if he and Sekai are close, and he says they just sit next to each other in class, but doesn’t deny it either.
The next day, Sekai once again proclaims her stance that Makoto is a moron, and tells him that he’s moving too fast and should make up with Kotonoha. Makoto tries to make up, but Kotonoha blows him off. Sekai witnesses this, and pulls Kotonoha aside after school and tells her that she isn’t considering Makoto’s feelings either. Afterwards, Kotonoha meets up with Makoto at the station, apologizes that she didn’t understand his feelings, and kisses him…

This episode establishes just how clueless Makoto is with girls, but it also explores some of Kotonoha’s insecurities as well. Sekai, while pretty obviously having a thing for Makoto, still pushes on to get him and Kotonoha together, though we’ll have to see how long that actually lasts.
We also meet a new girl this week: Katou, Makoto’s childhood friend, and childhood friends always seem to be in the running in harem anime like this. Last week I thought Setsuna might be interested in Makoto, but now I’m less sure. I actually think she may actually be interested in Sekai instead, but is frustrated by Sekai pretending that she doesn’t like Makoto (but this is just my guess).
I’m thinking it’s not going to be too long, though before Sekai decides that she wants Makoto for herself, and we may get a few other girls into the fray as well, but we’ll see. I have no idea how this will unfold, and I’m still not sure who Makoto will even end up with, so it is at least interesting in that respect.
