Kanon

KanonHave you ever seen an anime series that you were so impressed with and thought was so good, that you kind of had to put other series aside for a couple days just to fully take in what you just saw?

That’s kind of what I feel like after doing a weekend marathon for the 2006 remake of Kanon. Forget any blathering that I may have said about Rumbling Hearts being the best romantic drama I’d ever seen, I think Kanon blows it out of the water (sorry for the pun), at least on my first impression.

Everything about it - the animation, the music, the story - everything is nearly perfect I thought. Just sitting here thinking about it, I almost don’t feel like watching anything else for a few days just because they all seem so pitiful in comparison.

P.S. I’ve now added a Kanon theme…

Otakon announces fan panels

OtakonOtakon has announced their list of fan panels here (scroll down the page to find them).

I have to say, there isn’t a lot there which strikes me as overly exciting on first glance. There are really only two that I would label as ” do not miss” for myself personally: “Into the Sky: The Society, Technology, and World of Last Exile” and “Podcaster’s Roundtable.”

Maybe I’ll hit up “Anime 101″ to see if I can learn anything from it, given that I wouldn’t have been watching anime for quite 2 years by that point. I may swing by “10 Games You Should Have Played” to see if they go over any games for the PC or Wii, since that’s what I own that can play games, and “Animation: How It Works” may be an interesting watch if they know what they’re talking about. Maybe I’ll also swing by “State of Otakudom” just to see what they think the state of it is. Of course, knowing my luck, all of these will be scheduled at the same time, or at the same time as the big industry panels.

No panel specifically on blogging, which I’m disappointed about. Maybe if I run into other bloggers there this time, maybe we can organize some sort of panel for 2008.

Meanwhile, there are no fewer than 4 panels on AMVs, 2 panels on cosplaying, panels on Dragonball-Z, Inu Yasha, and Naruto (though I guess I shouldn’t be talking since I want to go to one dealing specifically with Last Exile), and at least 2 panels that appear to deal with the loli phenomena.

Then there are some panels that don’t seem to have anything to do with anything. I mean, “Introduction to Basic Embroidery and Beading”? Ok, I can get the samurai panel or the ninja panel, and maybe even the kendo panel, but embroidery and beading?

They also have 8 18+ panels, a few of which I’m not sure why they’re labeled 18+, but OK.

I won’t know what I’ll be able to go to and blog until the actual schedule comes out, and I figure that I’ll go to panels if I have nothing else better to do, but I was kind of hoping for a more impressive list of panels, at least for me personally. If I can I’ll probably attend as many as I can, just so I can write about them, though the industry panels will take precedence. While it is a pleasure trip for me, I still want to blog as much of it as I can

Review

Bokura ga Ita is a series about Nanami, a girl who has just entered high school and who is classmates with Motoharu Yano, who appears to be your standard, carefree guy. At first Nanami, who is usually just referred to as Nana, hates Yano because his apparent laziness and carefree nature. However, she ends up coming to like him. Soon she finds out that Yano’s ex-girlfriend, who was also named Nana, died in a car crash a year prior. As a result, Yano isn’t open to starting a new relationship, at least at first, and his reactions to Nana’s feelings to him were often contradictory, frustrating Nana.

However, on the night of their first cultural festival, Yano confesses his love for Nana, and the two start dating. However, their relationship immediately becomes rocky as Yano can’t seem to get over his old love for his ex-girlfriend, despite his repeated statements that he thought she was a cheat (she died while riding in the car of her ex). This leads Nana into fearing that Yano’s heart still lies with his ex and not with her and ultimately creates a significant trust-gap between the two.

In the middle is Yano’s best friend Takeuchi, who also falls for Nana and ends up putting Yano on notice that if Yano messes up, that he’ll be there to catch Nana. There is also Yuri, who is the little sister of Yano’s ex-girlfriend and also in the same class as Yano and Nana. She has her own past with Yano and harbors extremely conflicting emotions.

For how heavy the series sounds, there is still quite a bit of comedy, though this is much heavier on romance than your typical romance-comedy, making this title more suitable for a female audience (or you mushy-mushy guys out there). I didn’t particularly like the story, largely because of this, but I think objectively speaking, the story is probably a sound one. The ending is also left wide open, either leaving ample room for a sequel and/or resulting to extreme frustration.

I had to get used to the animation style in this anime as it almost looked like it was done in watercolor or something similar. It had a more washed-out feeling than the crisp animation I’m used to. Maybe I’m biased by being used to the more crisp animation, but it just looked like something you’d see 10 years ago or something.

Overall, this was a decent series, and if you like conflicted romances, you’ll probably like it. However, I’m not sure the audience that will enjoy this series expands much outside the hardcore romance fans.
