This episode is kind of a mix of a lot of stuff - but mainly deals with what people do when it’s raining and they can’t get any work done. It’s kind of slow, but there are still a lot of things going on at the same time (as can be evidenced by the length of my writeup and how many screen captures I took).

This episode is kind of a mix of a lot of stuff - but mainly deals with what people do when it’s raining and they can’t get any work done. It’s kind of slow, but there are still a lot of things going on at the same time (as can be evidenced by the length of my writeup and how many screen captures I took).
This episode begins with Suzu looking out in the rain, and mentioning to Ikuto that on rainy days, everyone takes the day off, but that she still likes working more. However, despite trying to have a little conversation with Suzu, she still just looks out at the rain with a pensive look.
Back inside, Ikuto attempts to make miso soup, but fails miserably. Suzu drinks the soup down anyway, and to Ikuto’s shock, says that, while it’s a little weird tasting, it’s still good.
Over in Chikage’s place, we find that she has been attempting to make a machine that can predict the weather, with two massive failures thus far. She then sees a frog outside and gets another idea, based on the idea that whenever frogs croak, it’ll rain. Chikage then throws on a “School Swimming Suit” to go out and investigate frogs in the rain.
Back at Suzu’s house, Ikuto sits around trying to let the time pass by…and by…and by, until he suddenly goes crazy, and says that it’s impossible for him to just sit around all day doing nothing. Suzu tries to think of some things to do, none of which suit Ikuto, until she comes up with Japanese Chess (Shougi), and Ikuto readily agrees to that, saying that Suzu better look out cause he’s good at it.
During their game, Suzu mentions that this is the first rain break Ikuto’s had since he’s been on the island, and that there was a large storm the day before he arrived. This causes Ikuto to ponder whether there is a connection between the storms and getting on the island, since the original settlers to the island came during a big storm, and whether the whirlpools may weaken during a storm. This makes Suzu stop in her tracks for a few moments staring at Ikuto. In reaction, Ikuto wonders what’s going on with Suzu since this is the second time that day she’s just spaced out like that.
Next we find ourselves at Yukino’s house. Yukino is bored, but suddenly decides to start a pillow fight with all the animals staying in her house. After that’s done, they all decide to go outside and play in the rain.
Next, we’re at Rin’s place. She’s showing off a chest she made to the bird and squirrel that live with her family (see episode 9). The bird mentions that the outside looks well made and tries to open it, but without success. Rin then says that it’s actually a sliding door instead of drawers. The two animas don’t find this very impressive, leaving saying that she should still stay an apprentice for now.
Back at Suzu’s house, Suzu checkmates Ikuto - for the 12th straight time. Ikuto remarks that she’s really good and Suzu says that she always had someone to play with when it rained. Ikuto asks who, and after hesitating, Suzu tell him: her mother.
Next we find ourselves at Ayane and Machi’s temple. Machi is upset that the crackers she is eating have become soggy because of all the rain, and wants to “vent” towards Ayane (who strongly rejects this course of action). Machi says she’s still hungry, so Ayane gives her a set of dumplings on a skewer.
Machi takes a bite and then becomes wide eyed and asks Ayane what they are. Ayane tells her that they are her special super-spicy dumplings. This pushes Machi over the edge. Machi pulls out her Ayane voo-doo doll, but Ayane grabs it away from her and runs out of the house as fast as she can.
We suddenly see Yukino running through the forest, being chased by all her animal friends. Yukino passes a large tree and says she wins (I guess they were racing) then suddenly sees a flower and starts to admire it.
Next we see Rin walking outside, and is suddenly passed by Ayane running and being chased by Machi. Ayane suddenly trips on some mud and falls down face-first, and is immediately jumped on by Machi. However, before Machi does anything terrible she spots some strawberries. She gets up and asks Ayane to give her a hand. The two then try to pick some super-huge strawberries.
They are finally able to pick it when both Rin and Yukino and friends show up. Yukino asks Rin if Chikage was with her. Rin says no, but then Kuma-Kuma spots Chikage assed out hanging on to a floater in the river. Rin tells everyone to go save her.
Suddenly we find ourselves back at Suzu’s house. Suzu decides to start making lunch, and Ikuto still wonders why Suzu has been spacing out, and wonders if it’s because she’s been thinking about her mother. While he is being pensive, Suzu pops up and asks him if he’s OK.
Their faces are really close (like they are about to kiss) when everyone else who had been together show up and the door (and Ayane slyly remarks that Suzu was trying to make the “first move” - a comment that Suzu doesn’t really get). Suzu asks why they’re all there, and they say they didn’t have anything to do and they all ran into each other outside, so they decided to come over.
Suzu goes to make lunch for everyone, and Ikuto thinks to himself that they didn’t just “happen” to meet up to come over, but that they came over to give Suzu company.
Suddenly Chikage says she needs to bathe, and Yukino says she does too. Rin says she’s fine, but Chikage and Yukino try to convincer her to come too. Meanwhile, Ikuto has a really bad feeling about how things are going down. Suddenly everyone starts stripping to go into the bath, causing Ikuto to exclaim that he knew it wasn’t going to be good (and getting another massive nosebleed).
After a while everyone leaves, and Suzu comments that they always come over on rainy days, and they always say that it’s just a coincidence, but that they’re clearly lying and just want to keep her company. Suzu starts singing a song that her mother used to sing to her.
Suzu tells Ikuto (well, we assume she does since Ikuto suddenly knows about this, but we hear it as part of Suzu’s memory) that her mother used to tell her that she’ll find the man of her dreams some day and marry him wearing her mother’s wedding dress. Ikuto starts imagining him getting married to Suzu with Suzu wearing an old traditional Japanese wedding dress (or I’m guessing that’s what she’s wearing), which he apparently finds highly appealing. Suzu suddenly snaps him out of his imagination by asking him what’s wrong, and that his look was “suspicious” which Ikuto tries to get out of, finished off by Suzu asking if he was thinking about Mame Daifuku.

This episode was the first time the subject of Suzu’s mother was brought up, though we don’t find out what happened to her. We also find that, even though Ayane is always after Suzu, she still has a soft side. We also learn that Rin is still the only one with any inhibitions towards just stripping naked in front of Ikuto, much to his personal displeasure.
Even though we’re not even halfway through the series yet, the hooking up of Ikuto and Suzu seems inevitable as ever (well, I think it always was, but now even if one was oblivious to the fact before, you shouldn’t be now). I’m just wondering what will happen after that, or if the series is going to turn into 15 episodes of the two of them hanging out and then they “get together” at the end.
That may be more likely, if for no other reason than Suzu is still oblivious to the idea of romance I think.

One Trackback
[...] Episode 19 starts with Ikuto reading a series of mystery novels in Chikage’s library about a villain named Beniyasha. Chikage tells him that there are a total of 7 volumes in the series, and that they were all written on Airantou, but the author, who uses the pseudonym of Shizumaru, is unknown. Chikage’s mother then walks into the room and Chikage introduced her to Ikuto, as it’s the first time they’ve met. It starts lighting out, and Chikage’s mother tells Ikuto that he should get home, since Suzu doesn’t like storms (see Episode 10). [...]
