What I Want to See: Chrono Crusade

Chrono CrusadeI’m not exceptionally passionate about my want to see this next series. However, I am writing about it because it’s been on my to-see list for quite a while, and that series is Chrono Crusade.

Nothing like gun-wielding nuns to get a story going, I guess.

This is one of those series where I’m hopeful, but at the same time doubtful about it. My decision to watch this series is driven about 80% by it’s popularity and 20% from what I’ve heard about it. Sometimes I end up liking series that I watch because of it just being popular (see: Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Azumanga Daioh) and sometimes I don’t (see: Love Hina), however Gonzo doing the animation never hurts.

Review

The humor in Azumanga Daioh has been described as appealing to those with a particular taste. I must have been one of those whose tastes it appealed to because I loved this series from start to finish.

Azumanga Daioh seems to almost be the Seinfeld of the anime world: it’s really a show about nothing in particular. It’s about a group of high school girls and their trip through high school. Of course, you have to include trips to a summer house, the annual athletics festival and cultural festival, and nothing would be complete without an insane teacher who is a rival with her friend and fellow teacher.

The teachers aren’t the only ones which are unique, however. Each of the girls the series focuses on have their own quirks. Chiyo is the pre-teen child prodigy who has skipped 5 grades to get into high school, and as a result, doesn’t always relate to the worries of high school girls. Osaka constantly fades in and out of her own inner reality. Tomo is the “wildcat” of the group: overflowing with energy, but lacking in talent, both athletically and academically. Sakaki is tall, and is insecure about her height, but loves anything cute, especially cats - even those which aren’t all that friendly to her. Kaorin is shy, but has a crush on Sakaki, which she can get very jealous over. Kagura is hyper like Tomo, but not as violent, and also has a tendency to be more normal as well, but also has problems with academics and common sense. Yomi is unusual in the sense that she’s the most normal of the group, though even she herself has an issue - obsession over her weight.

You put all these girls together, along with their teachers, and it’s nearly non-stop laughs. There probably isn’t a series I’ve seen which made me laugh out loud as much as this one. And while this series really had no central theme other than the girls’ trip through high school, there were several sub-plots that kept coming up in episodes. There’s the subplot about Yukari being obsessed about defeating Nyamo’s class in the athletic festival. There’s the constant reminder that Yukari’s insanity transfers to driving as well. There’s also the recurrence of Chiyo’s “dad,” a cat like being whom Sakaki is obsessed about, hates the color red, and is apparently Santa Clause.

Overall, it was a highly enjoyable experience, and I’m glad I finally got around to watching it.

As far as technical aspects of the show, the animation was pretty good, though not fantastic, with the animation style being simpler. The music is fantastic though, with a wide array of songs to match just about every character and any mood. ADV also did a fantastic job on the English dubs. As for the story score, while like I said earlier, this show doesn’t have much of a story per se, It follows a comedic philosophy and sticks with it, which in Azumanga’s case, sustains the series good enough that it doesn’t really need a story.

Nagasarete Airantou - Episode 06

It’s another blood-bath episode (literally) as the hot springs system on the island breaks down and Ikuto and Suzu try to find out what the matter is. In the process, Ikuto once again loses his body’s volume worth of blood.

Newsweek Article on Paprika

I was surprised to see this as the second link under the newsweek section of the MSNBC homepage: An article largely centered around the Japanese anime movie Paprika.

Some choice quotes:

A few days later, with far less fanfare, “Paprika,” the work of Japanese animé master Satoshi Kon, will also be unveiled. It happens to be one of the most wildly (and disturbingly) inventive animated films I’ve seen, but will anyone notice?

And…

There’s no reason the imaginative freedom that animation allows shouldn’t be unleashed on adult themes, especially when graphic novels have entered the literary mainstream and when CGI has blurred the line between live action and animation in films like “300.” Outside the United States, animators are not so likely to be confined to the ghetto of kiddie movies. Think of the marvelously macabre French hand-drawn gem “The Triplets of Belleville,” or the work of the Czech director Jan Svankmajer (”Alice,” “Faust”). Or, most conspicuously, Japanese animé, which is as likely to be made for 30-year-olds as for tots.

Read the rest. One can’t feel anything but content when the same writer raises anime movies like Paprika above almost certain hits like Shrek the Third. Spirited Away also gets an obligatory mention.

What I Want to See: The Third - The Girl with the Blue Eye

The Third - The Girl with the Blue EyeHow I came to know about this series was actually thanks to my podcast more than anything. During the process through which I decide on what the opening theme of the week is going to be, I came across the opening theme of this anime and liked it (in fact, I liked it so much, that it became the opening theme of Episode 18).

I went to the usual places (see: Anime News Network and Wikipedia) to read up on it and liked what I had read. It looks like a good, old fashioned “well, the world was nuked, now what?” type futuristic sci-fi anime.

Of course, there are a lot of those, but this one just seemed to peek my interest and just seemed like a good one to watch. My instincts haven’t been wrong much when it comes to that sort of thing, so if they say I should watch it, I should probably add it to the list.
