Nagasarete Airantou - Episode 1

Nagasarete Airantou is an anime series about a boy called Ikuto Touhouin who, after running away from home, goes on a ship, only to be thrown overboard. He finds himself on an island, but not just any island. It’s an island populated entirely by females…

Ikuto gets “rescued” by a girl named Suzu who valiantly saves his life by giving him CPR.

Ikuto is taken to the house of the island elder, who keeps him there until he recovers and puts him under the care of Suzu, however not before revealing an astonishing secret about Ikuto. You see Ikuto…is a boy!

This news sends shockwaves across the island and several of the other inhabitants become jealous of Suzu for having this extraordinarily rare find to herself.

On their way to Suzu’s house, they run into Ayane who, of course, wants Ikuto for herself. She tries to shoot Suzu with a dart, but hits Ikuto instead. When Suzu finally gets Ikuto to her place, she gives him the antidote which, one must say, looks like the most delicious drink you have ever seen.

Afterwards, Ikuto goes to the bath to get freshened up. Of course, not ever having been around a guy before, Suzu has no idea what wanting to take a bath with Ikuto will do to him…

Ikuto suffers multiple nosebleeds as, first, Suzu wants to bathe with him, then wants to clean his back, then wants him to clean her back. Then Ayane suddenly pops up (displaying all her glory to Ikuto in the process) and, again, wants Ikuto for herself. All of this is finally too much for Ikuto, who finally collapses due to massive bleeding.

However, this isn’t the end for Ikuto. He’s kidnapped by Ayane while Suzu isn’t paying attention, but is saved by Rin, the carpenter who immediately tries to propose to Ikuto. Meanwhile, Yukino, the youngest girl on the island, shows up riding a giant bear named Kuma-Kuma. Ikuto can’t catch a break here either as, after calling Yukino a kid, she immediately orders Kuma-Kuma to karate chop Ikuto.

Yukino and Rin start fighting over which one will date Ikuto, and Ikuto is able to make his escape. He walks through a village attempting to find a way to escape when he runs into Chikage. Chikage seems rather normal, until she tries to capture Ikuno to study him. He’s only saved from her by another girl attempting to shoot him down - Machi. Machi, Chikage, and the rest of the islands residents for that matter, start chasing after Ikuno until finally he’s saved once again by Suzu.

All this finally makes Ikuto decide to leave the island entirely and immediately. Ikuto finds (or makes) a boat and sets out to the sea. What he doesn’t realize is….the island is completely surrounded by whirlpools which prevent any escape by boat! Not only that, but there is an Orca patrolling the waters making sure that no one can get past the first layer of whirlpools to protect them from even large, more dangerous whirlpools beyond those.

In the end, Ikuto’s boat is tipped over by the Orca (named Sashimi) and he has to be rescued by Suzu. Of course, could we let this episode end without another nose bleed? Of course not, and this final one is caused by the fact that Suzu comes to save Ikuto wearing nothing but thin white cloth (and you know what happens to that when it gets wet).

Causing one final massive nosebleed. We just couldn’t end the episode without another one, could we?

My thoughts about this episode is this - this appears to kind of be Girls Bravo, but with considerably toned down fan service. Yes, there is fan service, and quite a bit of it, but it’s not gratuitous like it is with a series like Girls Bravo, at least not in this episode.

Of course, I compare it with Girls Bravo because in that series, the main character, Yukinari, ends up traveling to a world made up of 90% female. Nagasarete Airantou ups the ante considerably, though, by reducing the number of men to 1 - Ikuto - plus having Ikuto stuck in the girl-only environment, seemingly permanently (Yukinari was able to get back to Earth pretty quickly in Girls Bravo, so only a small part of that series was actually on the world consisting of mostly females).

Other than this difference, I don’t really see much difference between this and other harem anime series, at least after one episode. Character designs seem generic, and we’ve already established the series as a “girls running after boy” series, which most harem series are anyway. I’ll be interested to see if this series will end up being just more of the same in this genre, or if it finds a way to differentiate itself from the other similar series.
