Otakon Musings

OtakonAs I’ve said before, I’ll be attending my very first anime con when I attend Otakon this year in Baltimore. My hope is to blog about and post podcast(s) about the convention while I’m there. If it is feasible, I may even try to post a (theoretically) short nightly podcast about the convention. Part of this may depend on what my internet access at my hotel is like, something which I haven’t found out about yet, but I want to before I actually go to Baltimore. If my hotel does indeed include internet, then posting a podcast shouldn’t be a problem.

If that isn’t the case, there is the possibility of recording and posting the podcast from downtown Baltimore since they apparently have good wi-fi coverage. However, I can’t seem to clear up whether it’s free or pay (and how would I pay for it?).

If the worst case scenario occurs and I can’t get internet anywhere outside of an internet cafe, I’ll probably just post a podcast after I get back, but I’m hoping to post things from the convention.

Review

Girls Bravo is a show about a boy named Yukinari who gets hives whenever girls get near him. This was caused by girls making fun of him when he was little. Out of fear of his outbrek, Yukinari keeps him away from girls as much as he can. He gets this rash around all girls, even his childhood friend Kirie.

However, this changes one day when he was pulled through a portal into the bathtub of Miharu on the planet of Seiren, a planet made up of about 90% women. After being chased around by a bunch of man-starved women, including Miharu’s older sister, Yukinari is eventually able to escape, but brings Miharu with him back to earth. From that point on, Miharu lives with Yukinari, which is good for him since he doesn’t get a rash whenever he is around Miharu. The story then follows their adventures living together, as well as the adventures of two more girls from Seiren - Koyomi and Tomoka - as they try to find a husband for Miharu’s sister. However, things aren’t nearly that easy as sex-crazed Fukuyama and his sister Lisa, who is pursuing Yukinari, do their best to get what they want from Yukinari and company.

There appears to be one, and only one reason for this series to exist: fan service. Not only does this series have fan service, but it comes in excessively copious amounts which would probably be considered to be straight up pornography if it were in almost any other medium. In fact, the Geneon DVDs of the series explicitly say that the series has the equivalent of an NC-17 rating. Each episode seems dedicated to putting the female characters into situations where they can become naked.

This gets to be ridiculous, not only because the likelihood that the characters would be put into so many such situations is ridiculously low, but because the characters seem to stupidly walk into the situations like they haven’t learned anything from all the episodes that came before it. If Fukuyama’s plan yesterday and the day before and the day before that and the day before that all resulted in the girls ending up naked, or in some other type of sexual situation, it’s likely that his plan for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will as well. However, the main characters, not even Kirie, despite how aware she is of Fukuyama’s fetishes, seem to learn this.

The problem established at the beginning of the series appears to be the dynamic in the Yukinari/Miharu relationship as well as what the dots on Miharu’s forehead are. While the series does sort of follow the two character’s relationship, it is hardly the center of the story (the before-mentioned fan service is the center). Meanwhile, the strange dots on Miharu’s forehead aren’t even addressed until the last 3 or 4 episodes of the series.

While the series does have average to good animation and music, in the end it is little more than a mindless collection of fan service moments.

Review

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is a movie in which the bounty hunter crew of the Bebop attempt to collect the extraordinarily huge bounty of 300 million on a terrorist suspect after Faye witnesses the terrorist attack and thinks she can identify the man. What follows is a story which is a bit different from the average Bebop episode from the TV series. While most episodes in the TV series were largely action packed or comedy-centered pieces, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie has more of a feel of a detective movie.

The movie does have it’s action scenes as well, and plenty of them, as well as suspense and some hints of romance. However, a good portion of the movie deals with each of the four crew members of the Bebop’s investigation into different aspects of the mystery - from what agent the terrorist used to kill his victims in the terrorist attack, to who the terrorist actually is, why he is doing what he is doing, and what he plans to do next.

I rather felt that the type of stories told in most of the Cowboy Bebop TV series would lend itself better to a movie format, and in my opinion I think I ended up being correct. This movie, if it were watered down into 23 minutes, wouldn’t necessarily be misplaced in the TV series, but it works much better as a movie.

The animation didn’t seem to be all that much improved over the TV series, though there was some improvements. However, I thought the improvements could have been greater considering the movie was released nearly 3 years after the TV series. The music was unexpected in the movie, though still good, with a mix of instrumental pieces and mostly English language vocal songs. Like the TV series, the dub on the movie was excellent.

Overall I would say that the movie is one of the better examples of what Cowboy Bebop could be if given the screen time and writing needed to explore the story instead of being stuck within the continuity and coherence expectations of a TV series. If you enjoyed the TV series, or were intrigued by some of the concepts in the TV series, there’s a good change you’ll like this movie.

Welcome to Josh’s Anime Blog version 2.0!

My anime blog has now transitioned to WordPress successfully (at least as far as I can tell).  Getting everything to work ended up actually being a lot easier than I thought it would be once I found a couple tricks online.  However, if you see anything that you think is amiss, let me know either by posting a comment or by emailing me at podcast [at] anime [dot] calculusman [dot] com.

As you can also see, I’ve changed my layout in anticipation of the release of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I hope you like it.  Once the first disc is released, I’ll change my layout back, though I may design a brand new layout since by then it will probably be about the time to get around to that anyway.

For those with RSS feeders to my site, I have set up a redirect so that any RSS feeder you use should automatically switch over to the new feed.  However, if it doesn’t, the link to the new feed is at the bottom of the page.  There is also now a feed for comments, not that I get any on this blog.

And speaking of comments, you do have to register to post them.  Sorry, anti-spam measure.

Thirdly, to go along with the unveiling of my new blogging software,  I am announcing that I am, tentatively, going to Otakon 2007 in Baltimore July 20-22.  I say tentatively because I’ve reserved a hotel room and registered for the convention, but right now I’m going alone so I’m a little nervous.  This would also be my first vacation where I’m going by myself and not meeting up with people I know.

Maybe I should see if Ataru from Northern Virginia Anime with Ataru is going….  We could have a joint podcast! woohoo! lol.

Oh, and that’s another thing.  So far I haven’t missed a week posting a podcast.  By the time Otakon comes around, if I still don’t miss a week, I’ll be on episode 34.  I currently don’t have a laptop and I don’t see myself getting one in the near future unless I can find a cheapy one somewhere, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do for podcasting that week.  I could try to buy some sort of digital recorder I suppose and then post a podcast in the middle of the week instead of Saturday (or skip a week).

However, if I do eventually get a laptop and either there is a wireless connection at the convention center or my hotel has internet (that may be iffy considering where I’m staying) I may do a podcast on site (woohoo!).
